2 min read    Last updated Feb 26, 2026

Overview

Click Heatmaps visualize where visitors click on each page of your site. See exactly which elements get the most attention and optimize your layouts for better engagement and conversions. This is a Pro feature currently in Beta.

Feature Details

Category Engagement Analytics
Type Visual Analytics
Plan Pro (Beta)
Configurable Settings Yes

Prerequisites

  • Page Visit Counter Analytics Pro must be installed and activated.
  • A valid Pro license key must be configured.

How to Access

  1. Go to your WordPress admin dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Analytics > Heatmap from the left sidebar menu.
  3. Select a page to view its click heatmap overlay.

How It Works

When heatmaps are enabled, an additional tracking script captures click coordinates (X, Y position) on every page. Click data is stored in a dedicated database table with the page URL, device type, and timestamp.

The heatmap viewer renders a visual overlay on top of the selected page, showing click density as a color gradient — red for high-click areas, blue for low-click areas. You can filter heatmaps by device type (Desktop, Mobile, Tablet) and time range (Today, 7 days, 30 days, All time).

Heatmap data is automatically cleaned up after 90 days (configurable) to manage database size, and queries are limited to 10,000 clicks per render for optimal performance.

Benefits

  • Visualize exactly where visitors click on each page.
  • Identify which CTAs and elements get the most attention.
  • Optimize page layouts based on real click data, not guesswork.
  • Filter by device type to understand mobile vs. desktop behavior.
  • Automatic data cleanup keeps your database lean.
  • Preview mode lets you test heatmap rendering before going live.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the heatmap script slow down my site?

The heatmap tracking script is lightweight and captures clicks asynchronously via AJAX. It has minimal impact on page performance.

How long is heatmap data retained?

By default, heatmap click data is retained for 90 days. You can configure this in the heatmap settings. A daily cron job automatically cleans up expired data.

Can I view heatmaps for mobile and desktop separately?

Yes. The heatmap viewer includes a device type filter that lets you switch between Desktop, Mobile, and Tablet views to see click patterns specific to each device.
